Get to know The Color Blew
We had the opportunity to get to know guys of The Color Blew, an alternative rock band based in the East Rand, ahead of the first ever Mix Fest on 28 and 29 September 2019 at Cradle Moon Game Lodge, in the historical Cradle of Humankind, Muldersdrift.
Tell us about the band The Color Blew. Where did you start off and what do you aim to represent through your music?
We started off in Springs, where we still are, in 2014. Our aim is to make music, music that is honest, music that everyone can relate to, and to always be true to our passion – which is the music.
What do you feel has been your biggest achievement so far?
Besides the brotherhood we’ve achieved as a group, our biggest achievement happens every time we reach someone with our music and it touches a heart, a soul, a mind. People can listen to our tunes and feel something, and when they reach out and say thank you or tell their friends, that means a lot to us. Or, at a show, when we interact with the audience and see people feeling the music and letting the passion take them over, that is so unbelievably special. Our fans are our biggest achievement.
As a Joburg act it’s always difficult to stand out as a Punk Grunge band, let alone stand out in commercial radio play. How do you stay ahead of your game dynamically?
We just stay true to ourselves and our fans. Our intention as a band is to express ourselves and the challenges, and, or, celebrations, we’ve experienced as individuals, and more importantly as a band. We don’t set out to meet demands or expectations of the commercial market. In our experience, the music that means the most is music that conveys the reality and the passion behind it – and when people experience that, the intensity draws them in. We believe in and love what we do as musicians. When you hear it, when you see it – that is the game changer. The music has to of course be good and our show has to be tight, which is where the rubber meets the road to keep us moving forward.
Is there a full-length album available from The Color Blew?
Yes! Our debut album, The Canvas, is available on all major download and streaming platforms. And…..(enter drum roll)…. we are currently in the post-production phase of our second studio album, Light Switch, which will be available (assuming all goes as planned) 1 November 2019.
For any new fan prospects out there, what would you say makes The Color Blew’s sound and live shows stand out?
We have a sound, our sound – not a genre. Our songs could fit into a myriad of categories – alternative rock: garage, grunge, punk, hard rock, a touch of rap, and even a dash of Afro-pop. When you hear us, you know it it’s us. But the real answer is that we give everything we have every time we pick up our instruments. It is intense. It is real.
Where can we see you guys perform next?
We have a couple of shows coming in the next few weeks leading up to the Light Switch launch parties at the end of October 2019.
