Michael Lesar at Mix Fest
How did you start falling in love with dance music? Was it love at first sight/listen?
Yes it definitely was love at first sight. I remember hanging out at some of Cape Town’s legendary clubs back in the day like The Function, Club More, Keep It Real Events to name a few and going to Pharcyde Festivals those were the places I fell in love with, the sound and I was totally hooked from the start and knew it was what I wanted to do. I’ve always had a love affair with music from a very young age so it was very easy for me.
The music industry in dance music is as rich and influential as it’s ever been. Where do you gather the vibe, energy and inspiration from to compose a track in such a vast and expanding dance music culture?
I find inspiration for creativity in many different ways and places especially traveling, I love attending events, festivals and exploring the club scene when I’m in other countries. This combined with my love for life and music is all I need.
What do you feel is the main thing South African dance festivals can learn from festivals abroad seeing that you have played to so many sold out gigs?
South African festivals are actually right on top with the rest of the world. We have an amazing festival culture here i do think tho that we could become more aware of mother nature like leave no trace type of vibe. There are many festivals overseas that are plastic free and / or recycle all the left over waste. Also festival goers make an active point of not littering that sort of thing. It’s not like we are not doing anything at all i just think that its not enough and we could do more as patrons and festival organisers alike.
What are you most excited about Mix Fest?
It has to be the venue in The Cradle of Humankind (how cool is that ) and that absolutely amazing line up wow Mix Fest really out done themselves, so cool I’m so excited!
